Types of Child Restraints
Rearward Facing |
Infant restraints are for children from birth up to approximately 6 months of age, weighing up to 9kg and measuring not more than 700mm in length. The most commonly used infant restraint is the Baby Safety Capsule. |
Convertable Child |
Convertable Child Restraints are for children from birth until approximately 5 years of age. Convertable Child Restraints are used in the rearward facing position for the first 6 months of the infants life and then in a forward facing position once the child reaches approximately 8kg. These types of restraints are suitable for birth to approximately 18kg. It is recommended to continue using a child seat for as long as the child will fit into it. |
Forward Facing |
These are forward facing restraints only. They are suitable for children weighing between 8kg and 18kg (approximately 6 months to 5 years). It is recommended to continue using a child seat for as long as the child will fit into it. |
Child Harnesses |
Child harnesses are approved for children who weigh between 14kg and 32kg. They are normally suitable for children from approximately 3yrs to 10yrs of age. Child Harnesses can be used with or without a booster seat/cushion. |
Booster Seats |
Booster Seats and cushions are approved for children weighing between 14 and 26kg. Booster seats have a backrest ard often have sides. They generally provide a better level of protection in side impacts than Booster Cushions. Some Booster Seats can be used with a harness and they are preferred over Booster Cushions. |
Booster Cushions |
Booster Cushions are useful in vehicles not frequently used as they do not provide the same levels of pretection in an accident. A booster cushion is used until the childs eyes are at the same level as the top of the back of the adult car seat. A Booster Cushion should be used with a Child Harness to restrain the upper torso of the child. |
